Montagu Hospital

Bespoke are proud to have recently completed the manufacture and supply of a brand new purpose built reception counter along with some 40+ high pressure laminate doorsets for the rehabilitation unit at Montagu Hospital in Mexborough, South Yorks.

The new unit is the first of its kind in the UK, providing intensive therapeutic, medical and nursing care seven days a week in an environment specially designed to promote recovery.

The design and build reception desk and counter at the main reception entrance to the hospital were produced using AR Plus high gloss laminate.  The AR+ offers a hassle-free, durable high class finish with twice the surface performance of standard gloss laminates plus the AR+ technology delivers a gloss surface that is highly resistant to scuffs & mar abrasions, extending the gloss laminate cycle life, an ideal solution for this type of ‘heavy-traffic’ environment. The doorsets for the project were produced on a severe duty solid particleboard core, faced with high pressure laminate F7961 Fog Grey to exacting FD30 & FD60 specifications with the additional benefits of high acoustic performance up to 35db Rw.

Again a fast track project for us with all doorsets and the reception desk all completed on time and to budget in under 3 weeks.

Can You Put Glass Into a Fire Door?

In the bid to gain more light into a property many people choose to add, replace or modify their internal doors by adding glass to them. This may well be okay in a normal veneered door but can you add glass into a FD30 or FD60 fire door?

Now within our homes there are different requirements to that of a home which we rent from a landlord or a communal flat. In general terms all fire safety information can be found in the Building Regulations. Usually they concern providing a safe escape route in the unfortunate event of a fire.

If we take a communal block of flats then the most important element is to ensure that the main staircase which provides access and also acts as an exit is protected in the unfortunate event of a fire. In addition to this any landings and entrance halls need to be protected; if a fire does break out then any occupants in flats situated above a fire would be able to get out safely when the correct protection is in place.

Any existing fire door can be modified or replaced in order to include a glass panel to allow light. However, this glass panel has to be heat-resistant glass which is mounted within a suitable enclosure.  Fire safety whether within a rented home or one in which you own yourself should never be something which you take lightly.

Fire doors act to bide you more time to escape within the unfortunate event of a fire they act to either be open as an exit route or closed to act as a barrier preventing the fire from spreading.

The British Woodworking Federation Certifire fire door scheme is a major organization which provides our fire ratings. Our FD30 and FD60 fire doors are their fire ratings which are stated in minutes prefixed by FD.

Commonly used specified integrity levels are:

  • FD30 30 minutes
  • FD60 60 minutes
  • FD90 90 minutes
  • FD120 120 minutes

Therefore any glass which you place into a fire door should be resistant to heat. Bespoke Complete Services can specify you a Fire Door or Fire doors specific to your needs according to your circumstances. It is now a legal requirement that any landlord fits fire doors to their properties and that these are regularly maintained.

If you play with fire then you will get burnt”

However, it is much more than that! You are playing with people’s lives and no one can put a price on that. Make sure that fire doors are in place and are maintained.

North Wales Hospital Supplied With Specialist Doorsets

Within North Wales there are three district general hospitals and the one which occupies the central position, Glan Clwdy Hospital has been supplied with a number of Bespoke Complete Services specialist fire doorsets. Positioned just 4 miles from the sea, this hospital serves the population of the busy costal towns as well as rural towns set more in land.

A number of people come through their doors and summertime sees holiday makers keeping the wards busy due to this seasonal influx. Currently the hospital has 551 beds, known for its recent developments including:

  • The North Wales Cancer Treatment Centre
  • The Renal and Diabetic Unit
  • The Acute Medical Assessment Unit
  • The Sub-regional Neonatal Unit
  • The North Wales Clinical School
  • The Cardiac Catheter Laboratory

This was an extremely prestigious project to be asked to manufacture a number of doorsets for this North Wales Hospital. The doors supplied were a range of the specialist Ewood laminate faced doors, a factory glazed vision panel was inserted and these complied with FR30 and FR60 specifications. The glazed vision panels were fixed with hardwood, steamed beech clocking beads.

Polyrey Laminate was used to face the doors and these were manufactured on a solid particleboard core with 10mm exposed lippings on all 4 edges in a solid steamed beech with a fully lacquered finish.

It was then requested that all the doors be supplied factory fitted with ironmongery. This ironmongery had to include S/S kick plates, push plates, pull handles, overhead door closers as well as air transfer grills.

Furthermore the doors acted as part of a doorset and thus frames were manufactured in the matching steamed beech hardwood as well as complimentary hardwood double bullnosed architraves.

Bespoke Complete Services listened to the specification of the client and thus created high quality bespoke doorsets which were exactly what they required.
